Winter Checklist

Don’t forget these important chores before Winter!

Shut off your water

Don’t forget to turn off the water to your outdoor hoses. Turn off the water inside, open the faucet on the exterior hose bib, and remove any type of hose attachment.

These steps will help your hose keep longer and more importantly, protect your water pipes in your home.

Protect delicate plants

We have already had several cold nights, but it is not too late to protect your favorite plants. If you grow plants like elephant ears or banana trees it is a good idea to take precautions before winter.

Dig your plants up and bring them inside so they do not die from freezing temperatures. Or, you can insulate your plants by cutting them to the ground and covering them with a layer of straw.

Insulate doors and windows

Check doors and windows for drafts. If you find any, take the time to install weathering strips. Keep your home comfortable and decrease your energy bill.

Do NOT fertilize

Fertilizing your lawn or flowers this late in the year is ineffective. First, it is not a good idea to encourage new growth under frost and cold stress. Second, the frozen ground will not absorb the fertilizer and it is likely to run off into our water system.
